IP over FireWire
O’Reilly is running an article about how to turn on IP over FireWire support in Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther). I had forgotten about this capability, previously seeded only to developers, but as the article discusses, there’s a lot of reasons to use it over a wireless connection. First, it’s probably even less configuration if there’s not an already existing wireless network. Second, it’s 400Mbps, rather than 11/54Mbps, and you can really push 380Mbps+ through FireWire, where as you’re lucky to get 3Mbps through 802.11b, and 12Mbps through 802.11g.
Very spiffy. Apple’s TIL article is here.
