Sony Librié
Recently, I’ve been reading more and more research papers, trying to understand some specific areas of interest. While they’re almost all available as PDFs (CiteSeer, I worship thee!), I simply can’t read them on my Mac, or PC, or anything. They fit, but my eyes get strained and I get headaches after a while. Also, since many research reports are 2-column affairs, this is especially annoying for scrolling.
What I really want is “digital paper,” which would have the contrast ratio of at least mass-market paperbacks, and 200dpi or more of resolution. Ideally it would be reflective, rather than transmissive in design. The Sony Librié seems to be just such a beast, and the price isn’t too bad.
Unfortunately, there’s a couple things that are unclear to me:
- Does it convert PDFs to straight text and toss out formatting, or does it keep most of the formatting?
- How big are those files, and how many can I store on a MemoryStick?
- What is the real battery life? Everyone says “great,” but what is that in empirical terms?
Finally, where the hell can I get my hands on one so I can touch it before I spend the money? Any geeks in DC have one I could touch for 5 minutes? :-)
