Louisiana, 1927
As New Orleans floods from the failed levees on Lake Pontchartrain, I am reminded of the last time that New Orleans flooded in 1927, when the Mississippi River broke its banks (and a levee was breached by a molasses-tank inspector). It took months for the city to dry out, and begin to recover. For all that he would eventually come to be derided, future President Herbert Hoover personally directed the flood relief in his position as Secretary of Commerce.
I have spent many memorable times in New Orleans, and Louisiana in general, building friendships with interesting characters, and my heart and prayers go out to those who now fight for their survival all along the gulf-coast.
