Steam Power

There’s an article online about the ConEdison steam network in New York City. It’s amazingly fascinating to think about how much depends on something many people would consider an antiquated technology.

Some 30 billion pounds of steam every year flow beneath the streets of Manhattan from the Battery to 96th Street. While it is unknown to most New Yorkers, Con Edison’s subterranean steam system is the biggest steam district in the world, larger than the next four largest U.S. steam systems combined and boasting an annual steam production more than double that of Paris, Europe’s largest system.

Wow. That’s a lot of steam.

I wonder how that compares to the military steam systems on the bases in SE Virginia there are a couple of spots where a set of above ground steam pipe will follow a road for 3 or more miles.
