Uptime record
Many, many moons ago, I used to run a small VAXcluster (3 machines, 2 11/785 and an 8800) and it was a joy to manage quite honestly. In many ways, I miss VMS, even with it’s funky DCL, even though they had all sorts of eccentric behavior.
Anyway, I was perusing the Internets the other day, and came across this announcement:
According to George Cook of WVNET this cluster has been up for over 10 years.
Now that’s some serious uptime. One of the things a cluster gave you was the ability to move workload among machines and take machines out of service for periods—including full software upgrades. The flexibility was astonishing. It amazes me to this day that there’s simply nothing like VAXclusters available on any other platform.
