A tool for writing

This blog entry is being written in a totally new way. I’m using WriteRoom, a very focused single-purpose application from Hog Bay Software. What it provides is a clean slate for writing. There’s nothing more than a basic Cocoa text area, which wouldn’t be that interesting, except they’ve also found a way to make it a full-screen application. Basically, what I have is a pale blue screen with a “sheet” of white paper with 18-pt Lucida Sans type on it. Strangely, it works amazingly well for writing large amounts.

One of the reasons I’ve traditionally written in text editors, not word processors, is that I can focus on the actual words on the page, and not formatting or anything else. This is another reason I love using LaTeX for all my formatting needs—markup is semantic, not decorative. WriteRoom is a tiny application, but you should check it out.
