Memory usage of Camino
For a few months, I’ve been having ongoing problems with my MacBook Pro becoming painfully slow, and the symptom seemed to be the hard drive beating itself to death1 (once anyway), and causing the entire system to slow down. Using a few tools, I discovered that it was paging and swapping way too much. After a little timet o research it, I discovered the culprit seems to be Camino. At one point it was using 1.5GB of RAM (my notebook has 1.5GB of real RAM), with one page open, and that page was just static HTML. Insane. That’s one hell of a memory-leak.
I was using v1.0, and although v1.0.3 is out now, it doesn’t seem to mention anything in particular in the changelog. Given the improvements in Firefox of late, and my use of Safari as my primary browser, I’ll probably park Camino for now.
1 iostat is your friend. This let me quantify the amount of activity.
