Filling the void
When I first told people that I was planning to rid myself of my television, the reactions were a mix of incredulity and curiosity. How, they wondered, would I fill my time? The answer is a lot easier than you think. I have a backlog of perhaps 30-40 books that I’ve bought, but not read yet. Things that have been sitting on my shelf for months, or even years in some cases, and for which I “never have the time.” Without the constant yammering of the television, and with the time I spend on airplanes now, I should be able to reduce this backlog to almost nothing in no time, and get on with doing other things that I need to be doing.
So what are some of those things to fill the void?
- Go to the gym
- Cook more, for both myself and my friends
- Read more (see above)
- Code more
- Take more pictures
Later, I want to write about the “lure of the big tech” that some of us succumb to, myself included, and which drives us to spend huge sums of money on things that do not measurably increase our happiness.

I have not had a TV for the last 15 years or so. I find that there still are not enough hours in the day :-)
It’s kind of sad to think that some people use TVs to mop up “spare” time.
