IBM and Sun, sitting in a tree, S-O-L-A-R-I-S-I-N-G
Today is quite an interesting day for both IBM and Sun. For the first time since licensing it’s soul to Bill Gates, Big Blue has signed a deal to OEM someone else’s operating system. Jonathan Schwartz has more on his blog. This is important in my mind for a few reasons:
- It further enhances IBM’s position as a “neutral arbiter” for it’s clients
- It provides the backing of a $91 billion dollar company
- It gives Sun access to IBM’s global reach of services
- It gives IBM a migration path for any customers who might consider leaving AIX on the pSeries for “commodity hardware”
Honestly? I think it is one of the few times I’d say “win-win” applies. IBM isn’t the company they were 20 years ago, and Sun is obviously not either. Next up? Solaris on z/Series. You think I’m joking? It’s already started.
HP-UX? Dead in under 5 years.
