iPhone whining

Giles Bowklett whines about technology support in the iPhone:

Apple decided to leave out hardware support for the radio band that T-Mobile will be using for their 3G system. So while you can use it on T-Mobile’s voice and EDGE network, 3G on T-Mobile won’t work, and since it’s a hardware limitation, can’t be hacked to make it work either.

I’m pretty sure these tactics are illegal under United States antitrust law and have been for over a hundred years.

Apple also doesn’t support TDMA, CDMA, AMPS, W-CDMA, TD-CDMA, iDEN, WiDEN, TD-SCDMA, CDMA2000 or even D-AMPS.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

I’m pretty sure he hasn’t the foggiest notion what antitrust laws are really about, nor the idea of monopoly and restraint of trade, neither of which apply in this context. Maybe one day they will, but even that is highly unlikely.

What about after AT&T’s exclusive contract ends in 2012? Then if people want to use an iPhone with T-mobile, they’ll have to buy a brand new phone. This is extremely anti-consumer.

$199 is a lot of money. If people want to be able to use it for more than 3 or 4 years, they should. Some may consider it obsolete after 3 years, but not everybody. Just the early adopters.

Then it’s very easy: buy a different phone. There’s no enumerated right in the Constitution to an iPhone. If you don’t like the deal, the contract, or anything else, then deal with it. I’m sure there will be a “market” for unlocked phones from Europe, so you can pay $600 for one of those. If that’s too much, then buy a different phone.

There are no free ponies.

I get your point but (to be a geek) GSM is TDMA and 3G is W-CDMA.

Actually, GSM is more than TDMA, as there was TDMA in the US that wasn’t GSM. 3G is more a general category, with W-CDMA being an implementation of it.
