Light at the end of the tunnel
I don’t know whether that light is the sun, or if it’s an oncoming train, but effective September 5th, I am “off” this project. Now, I don’t know if off actually means “never working on it again”, or if it just means I’m not traveling, but that’s the date, and I’m standing firm.
This didn’t come easily, though. I’ve repeatedly asked for a roll-off date—for 2 months—and been denied any information. In many cases, I was told it as “inappropriate” to even ask. Regardless, I finally put my foot down when it was apparent that there was little if anything that I could contribute at this point. I discussed it with my manager, who backs me, and emailed the project manager and his boss.
The response? Nada. Zilch. Zip. Squat. Null.
In his normal passive-aggressive fashion, Eeyore is not even alluding to the fact that he knows I’m leaving the project, even when I bring it up. I know he read the email 2 weeks ago, but refuses to acknowledge it. I’m quite sure that come the 8th, I’ll get a call wondering where I am.

What will most likely help your case tremendously is a different project assignment…we’re always too vulnerable sitting on the bench.
Fortunately, I’m in a somewhat unique situation:
- My utilization, even if I sit on the bench for the rest of the year, is still over the “target”
- I have other projects that have been asking for my time
- I have remaining work to do on this project, but it’s all better done remotely, like writing documentation
Overall, not worried, and excited. Maybe the hurricane will keep me stranded somewhere so this is my last week.
Dude that’s awesome news. I know this particular project has been the bane of your life. Congratulations -the end is in sight.

I’m dumbfounded and fascinated at how someone managing a project, particularly one that large, fails to communicate anything with his team 99.9% of the time but yet is able to bamboozle senior management into thinking that he’s running the show efficaciously. If nothing is said on September 5th, the 8th will make for a most interesting day.
