Hello. Again.

Willkommen aus meinen Briefen.

There’s an enormous amount that I could say about myself here, as I have lived more than a few years on this planet, but I think I’ll stick to the bits that are potentially relevant and potentially even interesting. First, while I have traveled all over the world and been on 6 of the 7 continents, I have only lived in three places in all these years:

  • Austin, TX
  • Washington, DC
  • Seattle, WA

It wasn’t intended to be a triangle, and truth be told it’s not a very good one, and yet that’s how things turned out. Twentyish years in each of the first two, and the rest in the last one. The funny thing is that in many ways Seattle reminds me of Austin. Perhaps that’s my projection? I left Austin quite young, and every time I return it looks less and less like the city I left, but then it never was the city I left if we’re being honest.

Most of my life, I’ve been a “techie”. I’ve worked on embedded control systems, optical storage systems, global IP networks, object databases, web application servers, and now for the last ⌊ mumble ⌉ years, security. Currently, I work for a large social media company (no, note that one), which means security intersects a lot of other areas such as privacy and safety of users. As part of that job, I don’t get to do a lot of programming, which is part of why you’ll find me exploring some of those ideas on this site.
