Is this how we commemorate things?

An article in the Washington Post talks about Virginia (the state I live in, please, no eggplant) issuing a commemorative plate for the tragedy of September 11, 2001. While I, for one, do believe that there are appropriate memorials to the fallen lives that are most certainly missed by their family and friends, the concept of doing so as a license plate seems at best tacky, and worst insulting.

There is something slightly ironic (and therefore even more insulting) about attaching your memorial to a Ford Excursion , into which you pump gas from Saudi Arabia which has a long history of torturing their citizens, as well as numerous human rights abuses . The irony is dripping, and not in a good way.

This is somewhat like the I Love Jesus air freshener . Note that it’s in good company. Nothing says faith and devotion like a piney fresh scent.
